One of the lovely things about Christmas is handmaking your own sausage rolls! Get the kids involved in this family-friendly recipe.
You can mix up the flavours - add pickle, cheese, chilli sauce or black pudding!
Ingredients:
Roll ready-made puff pastry (or you can make your own!)
1 Beaten egg for sealing and glazing pastry.
400g Sausage meat, or your favourite sausages. (If using sausages de-skin and empty meat into a bowl).
Salt and pepper.
1 Tbsp fresh parsley chopped (optional, or add your own choice of herbs and spices).
Method:
Place sausage meat into a bowl and season with salt and pepper, mix in the fresh parsley. This is also the time to add in any other additions - we like to add black pudding chunks or a few spoons of chilli jam for heat!
Unroll the pastry and chop in half longways - so you have two long strips of pastry.
Divide the sausage mixture in two and spread along the length of each pastry strip in a cylinder shape, leaving a 1cm edge.
Tightly roll the pastry around the sausagemeat and brush the ends with the beaten egg - press together with a fork to seal the sides. Glaze with egg.
With a sharp knife slice the long roll into bite-size sausage rolls. Transfer to a baking tray lined with baking paper.
Heat the oven to 200 or 180 fan. Bake for 25-35 minutes. You can also freeze and then bake from frozen, just add 10 minutes to the cooking time!
